According to American media reports, around 20 people were injured in a shooting at the Engineering Building of Brown University, located in the US state of Rhode Island.

Police cordoned off the area from all sides and launched a search operation, while efforts are ongoing to locate the suspected shooter.

Earlier, at the time of the shooting, the Public Safety Department instructed students to take shelter in safe locations.

The university immediately issued an alert asking all students to lock the doors of their classrooms and put their mobile phones on silent.

In this regard, police officials stated that reports of gunfire were received from the university area, after which police immediately took action, surrounded the campus from all sides, and began searching for the suspected shooter.

Subsequently, Brown University in Rhode Island was shut down following the shooting incident. According to a news agency, this is the 70th shooting incident reported at educational institutions in the United States. Brown University has a total student population of 11,000.

According to American media, the shooting occurred at night, and the attacker fled the scene after opening fire. The university police, in a statement on their official Twitter handle, said that gunfire was reported at two locations, including an academic building and a sports facility.
